Industrial sol production and coating of flexible substrates with nano scaled sol-gel materials

This project is a joint project of several companies and universities, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The aim of the project is the development of a new process for the coating of flexible substrate materials like plastic films, polyester fabrics and textiles with nano scaled sol-gel materials.

The intention is to give the materials new, presently unreached surface properties by means of sol-gel coating. A key characteristic of the sol-gel coating is high scratch resistance by perpetuation of the flexibility of the substrate material. Further characteristics like temperature and chemical resistance, easy-to-cleanability and anti-graffiti effects can be set up.

For the coatings, nanoparticle dispersions are required. These dispersions have to satisfy challenging demands concerning fineness, solid concentration, transparency and stability. The Institute for Particle Technology is assigned to the development and production of these dispersions.
