Processing of nanoparticles out of poorly water-soluble drugs by precipitation and drying using microsystems

This research project is integrated in the lower Saxon doctoral program „Processing of poorly soluble drugs at small scale” (µ-Props) of the Center of Pharmaceutical Engineering (PVZ). The main doctoral program comprises four clusters which deal with biological and chemical synthesis of poorly water-soluble drugs as well as with precipitation of nanoparticulate drugs and their further processing to medical products. Additionally, a blood brain barrier model and methods to improve dermal absorption of drugs will also be investigated. For this purpose, different research projects, which are interdisciplinary conducted by different institutes of Technical University Braunschweig, are assigned to these four fields of investigation.
„Micro-precipitation for the preparation of nanoparticulate drug delivery systems” is the research project assigned to the institute for particle technology and it focus mainly in precipitation and further processing (e.g. stabilization and drying) of poorly water-soluble drugs in microsystems. It is necessary to know flow properties as well as growing properties in microsystems to characterize the influence of different formulations, process parameters and geometries of microsystems on microprocesses and product properties. Flow properties can be characterized especially with the help of µPIV-Measurements. By the gained knowledge, it should be possible to design particles with defined properties, which is required for the production of custom-made drugs.
