ProLiEMo – Production Research for High-Power Lithium-Ion Batteries for Electro Mobility

(Project period: 01.05.2009 – 30.06.2011)

The strategic intention of the project was to develop, establish and expand innovative production technologies for lithium-ion batteries in Germany to provide for a globally competitive, automated mass production of large format lithium-ion cells and batteries in Germany. With the announcement to use in 2012 lithium-ion batteries from a German production for the electrically powered Smart, it is proved that the project is successfully implemented.

Developments occurred in the three thematic areas:

  • Novel, industrial manufacturing technologies to produce large-sized cells and their components
  • Automated production of cells, modules, batteries and battery assemblies
  • New production technologies for high-power lithium-ion batteries

As a subcontractor of Evonik Litarion GmbH two main topics were investigated at the Institute for Particle Technology:

1. Evaluation of alternative coating technologies:

In search of alternative methods to apply the suspension to the current collector, a new coating technology, which meets the quality criteria in high accuracy of the electrode production, was tested at iPAT. Benefits regarding defined suspension application and the ability to produce structured electrodes in a multilayer process have been evaluated under this subcontract.

2. Detailed investigation of mixing and dispersion processes:

  • Pretreatment of single components
  • Evaluation of different mixing and dispersion devices
  • Evaluation of different formulation strategies and process routes
  • Supporting and evaluative analysis of powders, suspensions and electrodes
